- The course will explore the concept of wicked problems, defined as a problem that is difficult or impossible to solve, and will use the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as framework to highlight the pressing social and environmental challenges of our time.
- Throughout the course we will discuss the role of innovation in all sectors(e.g. private, public, and social) in tackling complex problems. We will examine how social entrepreneurship as a method can help address wicked problems and contribute to the SDGs.
- We will expand the concept of social entrepreneurship from solely building a new service/program, to also social intrapreneurship (using innovation within existing organization, such as corporates or public agencies) and social extra-preneurship (creating collective effort within and between new and established organization), and critically discuss the glorification of entrepreneurs (e.g. Heroentreprnieship).
- The course will also look at how to fund social entrepreneurship and will analyse the advantage and disadvantages if different funding model (philanthropy, impact investment, public funds, etc) on the social finance spectrum.
- The course will host managers, entrepreneurship and funders to guest lectures and workshops.

- Using the SDG’s framework, this course will highlight the pressing social and environmental challenges of our time and discuss the role of the private sector (e.g. business and investors) in addressing them.
- The course will start by exploring the concept of impact, defined as “a change in positive or negative outcome for people or the planet.” We will then examine how investors implement innovative strategies to minimize negative impact and maximize positive impact, focusing on responsible and impact investing. Finally we will analyze how businesses – both startups and corporates – are developing business models and products to generate positive impact. We will look into strategies like shared value and hybrid business models.
- The course will provide a theoretical framework for each theme, draw on real life examples, and expose students to leading organizations in the impact field.
